Key Factors  

The SPQ20 personality assessment instrument covers 6 clusters of mental skills:

Dynamism - competitiveness, aggressiveness, self-efficacy, and flow

Motives and Values - achievement, power, conscientiousness, and ethics

Openness - adaptability, self-awareness, and intuition

Sociability - relationships, empathy, and emotions

Anxieties - competition anxiety, fear of failure, and burnout

Techniques - self-talk, visualization, and goal-setting

Dynamism

The Competitiveness scale assesses how far you enjoy competing and want to win. High scorers are very competitive and like to win. Low scorers enjoy performing but seem less concerned about whether they win or lose.  

The Aggressiveness scale reflects the degree to which you adopt an aggressive approach and attitude and try to intimidate opponents. High scorers seem very assertive, aggressive and hard-hitting. Low scorers seem more tame, compliant, and passive.  

The Self-Efficacy scale shows whether you display self-confidence and bounce back quickly from setbacks. High scorers seem confident, resilient, and optimistic. Low scorers seem more tense, irritable, and negative.  

The Flow scale reflects how easily and quickly you are able to get into the zone. High scorers seem to be able to focus quickly on what they have to do and play instinctively. Low scorers seem to struggle to get into the zone and play instinctively.

Motives and Values  

The Achievement scale shows how motivated you are to achieve success in your chosen sport. High scorers train hard and make personal sacrifices to get on in their sport and achieve their ambitions. Low scorers seem to put less effort in and seem less concerned about advancing in their sport.  

The Power scale indicates whether you enjoy having authority over people, and whether you aspire to team leadership positions. High scorers enjoy leading the team whereas low scorers are happy to remain as team members.  

The Conscientiousness scale reflects the degree to which you show self-discipline, prepare thoroughly, and stay with the plan. High scorers seem organized, dependable, and thorough, whereas low scorers seem more impulsive, spontaneous, and flexible.  

The Ethics scale indicates whether you have strong principles, behave in an ethical manner, and show sportsmanship. High scorers stick to the rules and behave ethically whereas low scorers are prepared to bend the rules and turn a blind eye.

Openness  

The Adaptability scale reflects the degree to which you are open to new ideas and suggestions, and keep up with technical developments. High scorers are more curious, flexible and adaptable, whereas low scorers prefer to stick with what they know and tend to resist change.  

The Self-Awareness scale indicates how far you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses, ask for feedback, and reflect on your performance. High scorers know what they are good at, and think about how to address the things they are not so good at. Low scorers seem less concerned about understanding their strengths and weaknesses and improving themselves.  

 The Intuition scale assesses how far you rely on your instincts and intuition to guide your performance. High scorers say they rely a lot on instinct and feel whereas low scorers prefer to consider the options and analyse the situation.

Sociability  

The Relationships scale reflects how sociable and team-oriented you are. High scorers build relationships, engage in conversation, and enjoy socializing, whereas low scorers are more reserved and independent.  

The Empathy scale measures how considerate and sensitive you are to other people’s views, feelings, and emotions.  High scorers listen to other people's views, often reinforce them, and go out of their way to help other people. Low scorers are less interested in other people’s views, feelings, and needs.  

The Emotions scale indicates whether you know how to regulate your feelings and emotions to manage your performance, particularly when you feel under pressure.  High scorers seem to be able to stay in control under pressure and stress, whereas low scorers find it hard to hold it together.

Anxieties  

The Managing Pressure scale shows whether you manage anxiety and tension effectively before important events. High scorers seem to be able to manage their nerves, whereas low scorers let the tension get to them, and their nerves often interfere with their performance.  

The Fear of Failure scale shows how much you worry about failing and letting people down. High scorers do not worry a lot about this whereas low scorers are anxious about not living up to other people’s expectations.  

The Stress Management scale reflects how well you manage stress in sport and in your personal life. High scorers do this effectively whereas low scorers seem to exhibit some of the symptoms of burnout.

Techniques  

The Self-Talk scale measures the extent to which you talk positively to your self to maintain motivation, stay calm, and perform well. High scorers find this technique works for them and use it more frequently than low scorers.  

The Visualization scale indicates whether you use imagery to help play well, rehearse performances, and stay calm. High scorers find this technique works for them and use it more frequently than low scorers.  

The Goal Setting scale reflects the extent to which you systematically identify personal development priorities, set goals, and measure progress. High scorers find this technique works for them and use it more frequently than low scorers.
